Ducati’s supersport nameplate began with the original 750 Super Sport Desmo, introduced at the Milan Motorcycle Show in November 1973 as a road-going machine closely tied to the company’s racing success. That first era established the formula that made the badge famous: lightweight, focused styling, a production-derived twin-cylinder layout, and a clear connection to Ducati’s Imola and Daytona legends. Through the 1970s and early 1980s, the family evolved with larger-displacement versions and special derivatives, helping cement the supersport Ducati as a rider’s motorcycle rather than a pure showpiece. The original run eventually faded from the lineup as Ducati moved through a changing model strategy in the 1980s. The name returned many years later with a modern Supersport model launched for the 2017 model year, bringing the concept back as a road sports bike aimed at combining everyday usability with distinctly Ducati sporting character. That revival was later updated into the SuperSport 950 generation, which continued the same idea in a more contemporary form with styling cues inspired by Ducati’s track-focused machines. Because the nameplate has appeared in clearly separate production eras, it should be treated as a revived model rather than one uninterrupted run.
