Ducati’s 900SS nameplate first appeared in 1975 as the larger sibling to the earlier 750 Super Sport, built around the company’s air-cooled desmodromic twin and closely tied to Ducati’s road-racing image of the 1970s. The original 900SS became one of the defining Italian sporting motorcycles of its era, gaining a reputation for sharp handling, distinctive styling and strong competition credentials. It stayed in production through the early 1980s, after which Ducati’s old bevel-drive super sport line faded from the catalog as the company moved into a new technical era.
The 900SS name returned in the 1990s on a very different motorcycle. Ducati revived the supersport concept as part of its modern air-cooled two-valve sportbike range, positioning it as a more accessible road-focused Ducati for riders who wanted classic character without the expense or intensity of the company’s flagship superbikes. This later 900SS carried the spirit of the original nameplate into the 1990s and became part of the broader Supersport family that helped define Ducati’s middleweight sport models before the line evolved again at the end of the decade.
Because the 900SS was discontinued and later brought back as a separate production run, its history is best understood as two distinct eras rather than one uninterrupted model cycle.
