BMW introduced the M760i for the 2017 model year as the halo performance version of the sixth-generation 7 Series. It was the first BMW 7 Series to wear an M Performance designation, pairing the luxury flagship sedan with BMW’s V12 tradition in a way that made it stand apart from the regular 7 Series lineup. The car was marketed as the M760i xDrive, reflecting its standard all-wheel-drive setup and its position at the very top of the range.
The nameplate was tied to the long-wheelbase G12 generation in most markets, where it served as the most prestigious gasoline-powered 7 Series variant. Rather than being a track-focused M car, it represented BMW’s idea of a full-size ultra-luxury sedan with a distinctly sporting character. That combination gave the model an enthusiast following, especially among buyers who wanted a V12 flagship after BMW’s earlier 7 Series twelve-cylinder sedans.
BMW continued to evolve the model through the end of the G11/G12 life cycle, and the M760i gained added historical significance when BMW announced the 2022 Final V12 edition. That special run marked the end of BMW’s V12 series-production passenger cars for the U.S. market and effectively closed the chapter on the M760i as the company’s top gasoline 7 Series. The next generation 7 Series moved to the 760i xDrive name with a V8, so the M760i did not carry over into the new era. The result is a short-lived but important flagship nameplate that bridged BMW’s traditional V12 luxury sedans and the company’s newer performance-luxury positioning.
