BMW introduced the R 100 RS in 1976 as a milestone motorcycle and one of the most important nameplates in the company’s boxer-powered history. It was launched as a high-profile member of BMW’s RS family and helped define the modern sport-touring idea by combining long-distance comfort with purposeful road performance. Its most distinctive feature was the factory full fairing, shaped with aerodynamic development and offered as standard equipment, which set it apart from earlier BMW road bikes and gave the model an instantly recognizable silhouette.
The first production run lasted from 1976 through 1984. During that era, the R 100 RS became the flagship expression of BMW’s two-valve boxer twin, and it earned a strong reputation among riders who wanted touring ability without giving up a sporting character. BMW marked the end of that first chapter with the R 100 RS Classic 500 in 1984, a limited special edition that underscored the model’s status as a cult favorite.
BMW then revived the R 100 RS in 1986 after public demand for the large boxer returned, especially in key export markets. Although it had originally been intended as a limited special, it re-entered the regular lineup and remained in production until 1992. That second period gave the nameplate a new lease on life while preserving the familiar RS formula of a large boxer engine, full fairing, and long-distance versatility.
Because the R 100 RS was discontinued and later brought back, it is best understood as a two-era nameplate rather than a single continuous run. It remains one of the most significant BMW motorcycles of the air-cooled boxer era and a foundational model in the history of factory sport-touring bikes.
