M550i

The BMW M550i xDrive is the high-performance M Performance version of the BMW 5 Series sedan, introduced as part of the G30 generation. BMW unveiled it in 2017 for the 2018 model year, positioning it as the top regular 5 Series performance model below the full M5. From the start, it was aimed at buyers who wanted a fast, refined executive sedan with all-weather traction and a more understated look than a full M car. BMW described it as the first 5 Series M Performance model to use a petrol V8, which helped define its role as the bridge between the standard 5 Series lineup and the M5. The nameplate returned in the 2020 update to the 5 Series, when BMW refreshed the car and kept the M550i xDrive as the flagship combustion model. In that later form it continued to emphasize the blend of long-distance comfort, luxury features, and serious performance that made the M Performance 5 Series a favorite with enthusiasts who wanted speed without sacrificing everyday usability. The M550i xDrive disappeared with the arrival of the new G60-generation 5 Series in 2023, when BMW moved the lineup toward electrified variants such as the 550e xDrive and the fully electric i5 instead. As a result, the M550i xDrive is remembered as a distinct era in 5 Series history: the last V8-powered M Performance 5 Series sedan and one of the most notable sleeper performance sedans BMW sold in the modern era.
