MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the 530xi

The BMW 530xi was the all-wheel-drive xDrive version of the E60-generation 5 Series, offered under BMW’s xi naming for models equipped with the brand’s early xDrive system. It arrived in the mid-2000s as BMW expanded the 5 Series into new driveline territory, pairing the 530 badge with all-wheel drive in sedan and Touring form depending on market. In Canada and other markets, BMW introduced the 530xi for the 2005 model year, while North American sedan and wagon offerings followed in the 2006 model year. The nameplate belonged to the fifth-generation 5 Series era, when BMW was moving xDrive beyond its SUV lineup and into mainstream sedans and wagons. For the 2008 model year, BMW replaced the 530xi with the 535xi as part of a major 5 Series update, ending the original 530xi run. Enthusiast interest in the 530xi centers on its combination of traditional 5 Series character with BMW’s early all-wheel-drive technology, making it one of the more distinctive non-M variants of the E60/E61 generation.
