The BMW R 1200 S was BMW Motorrad’s dedicated boxer-powered sport bike for the mid-2000s. It was introduced for the 2006 model year and premiered at EICMA in late 2005 as a new supersport-oriented machine aimed at the pure sporting end of the market. BMW positioned it as a successor to the R 1100 S, but with a much sharper focus and a substantially revised concept rather than a simple update of the earlier bike.
At launch, BMW described the R 1200 S as the most powerful production boxer the company had built to that point. Just as important to its identity, it was designed to be lighter and more agile than the R 1100 S while keeping the brand’s familiar boxer character, shaft drive, Telelever front suspension, and other BMW hallmarks. The bike’s styling and hardware signaled a more aggressive, track-influenced direction, yet BMW also emphasized that it was intended to work as a usable road motorcycle rather than a pure race replica.
The R 1200 S remained a relatively short-lived niche model. It appeared in BMW Motorrad’s 2008 model-year lineup, where BMW still presented it as a sporting boxer with available ABS, Öhlins suspension, and other performance-oriented options. It was later overshadowed by the even more track-focused HP2 Sport, which was loosely based on the R 1200 S and took BMW’s modern boxer performance concept further. As a result, the R 1200 S is remembered as an unusual and enthusiast-favored bridge between BMW’s traditional roadgoing boxer twins and its more extreme high-performance boxer efforts.
