The Story of the K 1600 B

BMW introduced this bagger-style touring motorcycle for the 2018 model year as a U.S.-focused addition to the K 1600 family. It was developed from BMW’s six-cylinder K platform and translated that high-end touring formula into a lower, stretched silhouette with a more relaxed, custom-inspired feel. The nameplate marked BMW Motorrad’s move deeper into the American bagger segment while retaining the brand’s emphasis on long-distance comfort, refinement, and technology.

The model shares its core mechanical identity with the broader K 1600 range, which has made the inline-six family notable for combining luxury touring character with smooth, turbine-like power delivery. What set this version apart at launch was its visual packaging and rider position: a chopped rear section, low-slung profile, integrated luggage, and a design language aimed at riders who wanted touring ability without the upright look of a conventional full-dress motorcycle.

BMW later updated the K 1600 lineup, including this model, as part of a broader refresh for the 2022 model year. Despite those revisions, the nameplate has remained part of BMW’s touring range rather than disappearing and returning under a new run. It has become the most style-driven member of the K 1600 family, combining long-distance capability with a distinctly American bagger personality.
