The BMW X4 is BMW’s mid-size coupe-style crossover, introduced as a more stylistically expressive alternative to the X3. BMW first unveiled the nameplate in 2013 and brought the model to market as a 2014 model-year vehicle, establishing the X4 as one of the earliest examples of BMW’s “Sports Activity Coupé” concept in the brand’s X family. From the beginning, the X4 was positioned to combine the practicality of BMW’s compact luxury SUV lineup with a lower, more sloping roofline and a sportier visual character.
The original X4 generation entered production at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant in 2014 and quickly became a notable addition to BMW’s global X range. BMW later noted that the first generation ran through March 2018, when production ended as the model prepared for its next chapter. The second-generation X4 debuted in 2018 for the 2019 model year, continuing the same core formula but with a more modern design, updated packaging, and a stronger emphasis on performance-oriented styling.
The X4 has remained closely tied to BMW’s broader X model strategy and to the Spartanburg facility, which has become the brand’s main U.S. production hub for X vehicles. It also helped define the niche for coupe-shaped luxury SUVs before that body style became more common across the segment. In enthusiast circles, the X4 is often seen as the more design-focused sibling to the X3: less traditional, more distinctive, and aimed at buyers who value style and sportier presence as much as utility. The model remains in production today, with its history so far consisting of two continuous generations rather than separate production runs.
