BMW introduced the 335d nameplate in 2008 as a diesel-powered variant of the 3 Series, initially appearing in European Touring form and then arriving in North America as a 2009 3 Series Sedan with BMW Advanced Diesel and BluePerformance technology. In the U.S., the 335d was a short-lived but notable addition to the E90-generation lineup, aimed at showing that a diesel could fit BMW’s performance image while still emphasizing efficiency and long-range touring capability. That first American run ended after the 2011 model year.
The 335d name did not disappear for good. BMW later revived it in Europe on the 3 Series Touring and, in some markets, the 3 Series Sedan as well, beginning with the F30/F31-era updates from the early 2010s. In that later period, the badge continued BMW’s tradition of using the 35d designation for higher-output diesel six-cylinder 3 Series models, often paired with xDrive in markets where it was offered. Because the 335d badge has appeared in more than one distinct era and body style, it is best treated as a recurring BMW diesel nameplate rather than a single uninterrupted model run.
