BMW introduced the 328Ci as part of the E46 3 Series coupe range for the 1999 model year, positioning it as the six-cylinder step above the smaller coupe models. It carried forward the 328 designation from the earlier E36-era 328i, but in this case it was applied to the two-door Ci body style rather than to a separate standalone performance line. In BMW’s history, the 328Ci sits at the transition point between two generations of the 3 Series coupe. It was a relatively short-lived model, built from late 1998 through mid-2000, and it was replaced by the 330Ci when BMW revised the E46 range. That makes the 328Ci especially interesting as one of the last 3 Series coupes to carry the 328 badge before BMW moved to the 330 naming convention.
