The Story of the iX

BMW introduced the iX as a purpose-built battery-electric luxury SUV at the start of the 2020s, positioning it as a technological flagship rather than an electric conversion of an existing X model. The nameplate was previewed publicly in 2021, with BMW presenting the production form at Auto Shanghai and confirming series production later that year. The vehicle reached customers as a 2022 model in markets such as the United States, where it represented a new chapter for BMW’s electric lineup and a more modern expression of the brand’s Sports Activity Vehicle idea.

From the beginning, the iX was conceived around electrification, digital systems, and sustainability. It was developed to showcase BMW’s next-generation EV architecture, along with a new interior and interface philosophy that emphasized a clean, lounge-like cabin and advanced infotainment. In BMW’s lineup, it quickly became the brand’s flagship electric SUV and one of the most important models in the transition from the original BMW i sub-brand era to a broader, mainstream electric portfolio.

The iX has remained in continuous production since its debut and has evolved through model-year updates rather than disappearing and returning. BMW later revised the vehicle’s styling and model range, keeping the nameplate at the center of its all-electric SUV offering. For enthusiasts, the iX stands out as BMW’s most ambitious early attempt to blend traditional premium SUV utility with a dedicated EV platform, a distinctive design language, and a clearly forward-looking technical identity.
