MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the 650xi

BMW’s 650xi was the shorthand used in some markets and literature for the xDrive versions of the 6 Series. It appeared with the all-new 6 Series for the 2012 model year, when BMW brought back the big front-engine grand tourer in coupe and convertible form and added all-wheel drive to the V8-powered variant. In BMW’s own marketing, these cars were usually described as 650i xDrive rather than as a separate 650xi model, but the designation became a familiar way to refer to the AWD 650i family.

The nameplate covered the F12 coupe and convertible at launch, then expanded to the F06 Gran Coupé when that four-door 6 Series joined the range for 2013. Across those body styles, the 650xi represented the more traction-focused, all-weather version of BMW’s luxury performance flagship short of the M6, combining the 6 Series’ long-hood GT character with xDrive and the brand’s V8 top-end positioning.

BMW refreshed the 6 Series line during its run, but the 650xi/xDrive V8 variant remained part of the 6 Series family until the coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupé were phased out after the 2018 model year. It is best understood as a market-facing variant within the 6 Series lineage rather than as a completely separate standalone BMW model.
