MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the F 900 R

BMW Motorrad introduced this middleweight roadster for the 2020 model year, unveiling it in late 2019 as the new F 900 R. It was positioned as a dynamic, purist-focused street bike and was presented as a significant successor to the earlier F 800 R, carrying the brand’s parallel-twin roadster concept into a more modern package. The model shared its basic engine architecture with the contemporary F 900 XR and used BMW’s updated 895 cc twin, giving the bike a clear step up in character and refinement over the outgoing F series roadster. The launch emphasized everyday usability, sporty handling and a more aggressive design language, aiming the bike at riders who wanted a lively naked motorcycle without moving into a full superbike posture. BMW kept the nameplate in the lineup and continued to revise it in later model years, including a notable update for 2025 that brought revised ergonomics, chassis and electronics changes. Because the model remains on sale and has not been discontinued, there is no final model year to record. The F 900 R has also become a familiar part of BMW Motorrad’s current roadster range, extending the company’s mid-capacity twin-cylinder street bike family into the present day.
