BMW introduced the R 100 GS in 1987 as part of the second generation of its GS adventure motorcycles, alongside the smaller R 80 GS. It marked a major step in the evolution of BMW’s large dual-sport line by moving the GS concept upmarket with the biggest-displacement boxer enduro BMW had offered at the time. The model was developed to be a more capable long-distance travel motorcycle that could still handle rough terrain, and it became an important bridge between the original R 80 G/S and the modern GS family.
A defining feature of the R 100 GS was BMW’s Paralever rear suspension system, which was introduced to improve handling and reduce the shaft-drive reactions that could be felt in off-road use. The model also helped establish the rugged, go-anywhere identity that would become central to the GS nameplate. BMW later expanded the line with the R 100 GS Paris-Dakar, a more adventure-oriented variant that reinforced the bike’s reputation among long-distance riders and enthusiasts.
The R 100 GS remained in production through 1996, when BMW’s air-cooled, two-valve boxer GS era came to an end and the company moved toward the newer R 1100 GS. Because it represents the last generation of the classic boxer-based GS before the oilhead era, the R 100 GS is widely regarded as one of the most significant motorcycles in BMW history and a foundational model in the adventure-bike segment.
