This nameplate was introduced for the 2019 model year as BMW Motorrad’s updated large-capacity adventure model, replacing the long-running previous-generation GS and debuting with the company’s ShiftCam boxer engine. It carried forward the GS formula of a road-biased but genuinely off-road-capable touring enduro, with the familiar boxer layout, shaft drive and long-distance focus that have defined the GS family for decades. BMW kept refining the model through its run with equipment and model-year updates, including special editions and revised trim themes, while preserving its core role as the standard GS in the lineup. Production of this generation continued through the 2023 model year, after which BMW Motorrad moved to the newer R 1300 GS for 2024. The end of the run was marked by the 1,000,000th GS with a boxer engine leaving BMW’s Berlin plant in June 2023, a milestone that underscored the model’s importance within the brand’s adventure-motorcycle history.
