BMW introduced the K 100 LT in 1986 as a more luxurious long-distance version of the K 100 RT, building on the company’s then-new K-series platform. It was aimed squarely at touring riders who wanted the smooth, water-cooled four-cylinder K-bike concept wrapped in more comfort, more weather protection, and a richer standard-equipment package. The LT’s identity was not as a sport-tourer, but as BMW’s premium “Luxury Touring” interpretation of the K 100 formula.
The model arrived during a major turning point for BMW Motorrad. The K series represented a break from the brand’s traditional boxer-twin image, and the K 100 LT helped show that the new layout could support a refined, high-mileage touring machine as well as a performance-oriented one. BMW’s own heritage material notes that the LT was based on the RT’s technical platform, but was visually and functionally upgraded for comfort. Its success was strong enough that the RT was briefly removed from the range in favor of the LT in 1987.
The K 100 LT remained in production through the end of its first and only run in 1991. It is remembered as an early cornerstone of BMW’s modern touring lineage and as one of the motorcycles that helped establish the K-bike family as a serious alternative to the brand’s classic boxer tourers.
