BMW’s 850CSi was the range-topping, enthusiast-focused version of the E31 8 Series coupe. It arrived for model year 1993 as a sharper, more exclusive companion to the original 850i, which was then renamed 850Ci once the CSi joined the lineup. Built as BMW’s flagship grand tourer of the period, the 850CSi sat at the top of the 8 Series family and reflected the brand’s effort to combine long-distance luxury with serious high-speed capability.
The model was distinguished not just by its positioning, but by the way BMW engineered it. The 850CSi used a more powerful V12 than the regular 850Ci and came with chassis and steering changes intended to match its higher performance character. It was also offered with a manual transmission, reinforcing its driver-oriented image at a time when many luxury coupes were moving toward automatics. In BMW’s own heritage material, the 850CSi is described as the top-of-the-line 8 Series coupe, and it was treated as the most capable road-going expression of the E31 platform.
Production ran through 1996, after which the 850CSi disappeared with no direct successor in the original 8 Series line. That short run, combined with its role as the ultimate factory E31, has made it one of the most sought-after modern classics from BMW’s 1990s era.
