BMW introduced the 640i nameplate with the modern 6 Series for the 2012 model year, first appearing on the new 6 Series Coupe and Convertible. It marked BMW’s return to a six-cylinder 6 Series in markets such as the United States after a long absence, and it sat below the V8-powered 650i as the more accessible, performance-oriented inline-six variant. BMW later expanded the 640i designation to the 6 Series Gran Coupe, bringing the same nameplate to the four-door coupe-style body. For the 2014 model year, xDrive all-wheel drive joined the range, creating 640i xDrive versions of the Coupe, Convertible, and Gran Coupe. The 640i name then carried into the next 6 Series era with the Gran Turismo, which launched in 2018 as a 640i xDrive model and was updated in 2020. Across these generations, the 640i became the familiar six-cylinder entry point for the 6 Series line, representing the balance of luxury, long-distance comfort, and BMW’s traditional straight-six character.
