BMW Motorrad introduced the F 800 R for the 2009 model year as a mid-size naked roadster in its F series, expanding the line beyond the earlier F 800 S, ST and GS models. It was positioned as a sporty, approachable BMW roadster with a parallel-twin character and a focus on agility, everyday usability and light handling rather than outright supersport intent. The nameplate was first shown publicly at EICMA in 2008 and reached the market in May 2009.
The F 800 R received a visual update for the 2012 model year, reflecting BMW Motorrad’s effort to keep the roadster fresh while retaining its core concept. BMW continued to refine the model through later years with equipment and specification changes, but the basic formula remained centered on a compact, rider-friendly middleweight roadster.
In BMW Motorrad’s own 2020 product launch materials, the new F 900 R was described as the successor to the F 800 R, marking the end of the original 800 R’s run and the start of a more modern replacement in the same street-roadster role. Within BMW’s modern motorcycle lineup, the F 800 R is remembered as one of the brand’s more accessible and usable naked bikes, bridging the gap between beginner-friendly ergonomics and the sharper character BMW riders expected from the F series.
