The Thruxton R was the higher-spec evolution of the modern Thruxton cafe racer, introduced for the 2016 model year after the nameplate returned to the lineup in 2004 on the earlier 900cc version. The 2016 redesign moved the model into the 1200cc era and gave it a more focused sporting character, with chassis, suspension and braking upgrades that set it apart as the premium choice in the classic-performance range. It was positioned as a contemporary interpretation of the original Thruxton racing spirit: low, purposeful, and built to evoke the British cafe-racer tradition rather than to chase outright practicality. The R designation identified the more performance-oriented specification within the Thruxton family, and the model became especially well known among riders who wanted retro styling with serious road manners. In Triumph’s own brand history, the Thruxton R is described as the 2016 transformation of the original modern Thruxton cafe racer, and it was later superseded by the Thruxton RS, which carried the concept forward with further updates.
