It replaced the company’s earlier Daytona-era four-cylinder models with a radically different concept: a compact three-cylinder engine, a lightweight chassis, and a riding position aimed squarely at track-day and race use. That combination quickly gave the bike a strong reputation for agility, refinement, and a distinctive character that set it apart from Japanese inline-four rivals.
Over its life, the nameplate evolved through several important updates rather than being reinvented each time. The original machine established the formula, while later revisions sharpened the styling and handling and broadened the model family. Triumph also created higher-spec versions, including the race-oriented R variant, which helped the bike stay competitive in production supersport racing and in enthusiast circles.
