Suzuki’s 400-class maxi-scooter lineage began in Japan in 1998 as the Skywave 400, the company’s first 400cc scooter. By 2000, Suzuki was already using the Burgman name on export documentation for the model, and the Burgman 400 badge became the global identity of the line as it developed into Suzuki’s large luxury scooter family. The model was positioned as a practical long-distance step-through with the comfort and storage expected of a premium commuter, while still emphasizing road manners and a more motorcycle-like chassis feel than a typical small scooter.
Over time, the machine evolved through several major updates rather than disappearing and returning. Early versions carried the Skywave name in Japan, while later generations added fuel injection, revised bodywork, improved touring convenience, and stronger emphasis on refinement and passenger comfort. A significant redesign arrived for the 2017 model year, when Suzuki brought the scooter fully under the Burgman brand worldwide and gave it a slimmer, sportier appearance, more modern lighting, and improved practicality. That 2017 update marked the point at which the Burgman 400 became the clearly unified global nameplate seen today.
The Burgman 400 has remained one of Suzuki’s signature mid-size scooters: upscale enough for commuting and touring, but compact and manageable compared with larger maxi-scooters. Its long-running appeal comes from the combination of comfort, weather protection, storage, and everyday usability that helped establish the Burgman family as a benchmark in the category.
