MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Wave

This Canadian-market subcompact was introduced for the 2005 model year as a Pontiac-badged version of GM’s global small-car program, closely related to the Chevrolet Aveo and its Daewoo roots. It was offered as an affordable entry-level car in sedan and hatchback form, aimed at buyers who wanted a simple, fuel-conscious commuter with a low purchase price and easy-to-serve GM mechanicals. The nameplate fit Pontiac’s then-shifting strategy in Canada, where the brand was used on a mix of mainstream cars and value-oriented imports.

The Wave ran through the 2008 model year as the original nameplate. For 2009, GM revised the car’s branding in Canada to G3 Wave, which marks the end of the Wave-only naming period rather than a separate revival. As a result, the Wave is best understood as a short-lived Canadian Pontiac subcompact that bridged the transition from the Aveo-derived launch car to the later G3-branded variant.
