This Pontiac nameplate was introduced for the 1982 model year as part of General Motors’ new front-wheel-drive A-body mid-size family. It replaced the smaller, rear-wheel-drive Phoenix as Pontiac’s mainstream midsize offering and arrived at a moment when GM was rethinking its passenger-car lineup around lighter, more space-efficient packaging. The nameplate covered a broad range of body styles over its life, including two-door and four-door sedans and a station wagon, giving Pontiac a versatile family car that sat below the brand’s performance and luxury-oriented flagships.
Although it began as an ordinary mid-size model, the line gained real enthusiast attention through special variants, especially the STE, which gave the car a far more ambitious character than its humble origins suggested. The STE added a more upscale and driver-focused presentation and became one of the more memorable GM A-body derivatives of the decade. Later in the run, the model also became notable for pioneering all-wheel drive in a GM passenger car application, helping give the platform a late-career technical showcase.
By the late 1980s, the market had moved on and Pontiac’s lineup was being reshuffled. The nameplate was discontinued after the 1991 model year, when Pontiac redirected buyers toward other expanded divisions of its portfolio. Today it is remembered as a distinctly early-1980s GM product: practical, often overlooked, but historically important as one of the defining examples of the company’s front-wheel-drive midsize transition.
