This Pontiac nameplate first appeared for the 1973 model year as a sporty A-body intermediate built to sit above the LeMans in Pontiac’s lineup. The early version was known for its aggressive styling, including the signature Endura-nose front end, and it was aimed at buyers who wanted a more upscale personal-luxury feel in a mid-size car. That first production run lasted through the 1975 model year, after which the nameplate was dropped as Pontiac reshuffled its intermediate offerings.
The name returned for the 1978 model year on a different midsize platform, again as a performance-leaning trim in Pontiac’s rear-drive lineup. That second run was shorter and ended after 1980 as GM continued to reorganize its intermediate cars during a period of changing market demand and downsizing.
The best-known era began in 1985, when the name was revived on a front-wheel-drive compact built on GM’s N-body architecture. In this form, it evolved from a coupe-focused entry into a more mainstream sedan, later adding broader appeal with a four-door body style. Over time it became one of Pontiac’s core front-drive cars, positioned as a youthful, value-oriented sport sedan rather than a luxury model. The final version remained in production through the 2005 model year, when Pontiac ended the nameplate after a long run that spanned three distinct production periods and several very different market eras.
