MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Sunbird 2000

This Pontiac nameplate appeared during the brand’s early front-wheel-drive compact era, first arriving for the 1983 model year on the J-body convertible. In 1984, Pontiac broadened the same nameplate across the line, applying it to coupe, hatchback, sedan, and convertible body styles. The car sat in the small-car market as a sporty, more upscale alternative within Pontiac’s compact lineup, and it helped bridge the transition from the earlier J-car naming scheme back to the familiar Sunbird family. For 1985, Pontiac simplified the badge again and returned to the Sunbird name, ending this short-lived 2000-era designation after just two model years.
