KTM’s Super Duke R nameplate emerged as the high-performance evolution of the original Super Duke family. KTM says the Super Duke line began in 2005 with the 990 Super Duke, and the Super Duke R variant followed in 2008 as a more focused, more aggressive street machine. Early versions established the formula: a large-displacement V-twin naked bike with a raw, supermoto-influenced character aimed at riders who wanted serious performance without sacrificing everyday road usability. Over time, the model became one of KTM’s signature road bikes and a key part of the brand’s Duke identity.
The nameplate has since gone through major updates rather than disappearing. KTM introduced the 1290 Super Duke R in 2014, moving the model into a new era built around the LC8 platform and reinforcing its reputation as “The Beast.” KTM later described the 2020 redesign as a complete rework focused on handling and usability while preserving the bike’s aggressive personality. In 2024, KTM unveiled the 1390 Super Duke R and 1390 Super Duke R EVO, continuing the same nameplate into a new generation.
Because the Super Duke R line has remained in production and evolved through successive generations, it is best understood as a continuous nameplate rather than a discontinued-and-revived model.
