KTM introduced the 1190 Adventure R for the 2013 model year as the more dirt-focused companion to the standard 1190 Adventure. It arrived during KTM’s shift away from the long-running 990 Adventure formula and helped establish the brand’s modern large-displacement travel-enduro direction. The R version was aimed at riders who wanted the Adventure platform’s long-distance capability with a stronger off-road emphasis, using a taller chassis stance and more rugged suspension and wheel setup than the road-biased sibling. KTM also positioned the model as part of its broader push to bring more electronic rider aids and refined touring manners to a machine that still kept the brand’s off-road identity front and center. The 1190 Adventure R remained on sale through the 2016 model year, after which KTM’s Adventure lineup moved on to newer displacement classes and naming conventions. Among KTM enthusiasts, it is remembered as an important bridge between the simpler big twins of the 990 era and the more powerful, heavily equipped Adventure models that followed.
