MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the 690 SMC

This KTM supermoto nameplate was introduced for the 2008 model year as a road-going, LC4-powered single-cylinder machine aimed at riders who wanted a lightweight, competition-inspired street bike with sharp handling and aggressive styling. KTM offered it in several markets, and the model remained in the range through the 2011 model year, with factory parts listings and model references confirming 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 production years.

The bike represented KTM’s take on the big-bore supermoto formula: a tall, minimalist, street-legal machine built around the company’s long-running single-cylinder performance heritage. It sat within KTM’s supermoto family alongside related 690 variants and helped establish the 690 platform as one of the better-known large-displacement supermoto offerings of its era.

For WhipPotion purposes, this is a single continuous production run. The later 690 supermoto model with the added R suffix is a separate nameplate and should not be merged into this record. After the original 690 SMC ended, KTM continued the concept under that distinct revised designation rather than extending the original badge. As a result, the original nameplate’s verified model-year span is 2008 through 2011.
