KTM’s Duke nameplate first appeared in 1994, when the Austrian manufacturer introduced a raw, minimalist street motorcycle that helped define its modern naked-bike identity. The original Duke stood out for its stripped-back styling, exposed trellis frame and single-cylinder character, giving KTM a distinctive on-road presence that was very different from its off-road roots. In 1999, KTM expanded the concept with the Duke II, which sharpened the formula and helped establish the model’s hooligan reputation.
From there, the Duke badge evolved into a broader family rather than a one-off machine. KTM used the nameplate across several capacities and engine layouts, but the core idea remained the same: lightweight, aggressive naked motorcycles with an emphasis on attitude and rider engagement. The 690 Duke brought the concept into a more modern era in 2008, while smaller-displacement Dukes later broadened the appeal of the range to new riders and markets.
KTM marked 30 years of the Duke in 2024, underscoring that the nameplate has been in continuous production since its debut. Today, Duke remains one of KTM’s best-known street motorcycle identities and a key part of the brand’s performance-naked image.
