KTM’s LC4-based supermoto line arrived in the mid-2000s as a road-focused extension of the company’s long-running big single-cylinder platform. The original SMC badge appeared in 2004 with the 625 SMC, a lightweight, dirt-bike-influenced street machine that translated KTM’s LC4 engine character into a sharper, more pavement-oriented package. In the following years KTM broadened the concept with 660 SMC and later 690 SMC versions, keeping the formula centered on a torquey single-cylinder engine, minimal bodywork, and an aggressive supermoto stance.
The nameplate became especially significant because it helped define KTM’s modern large-displacement supermoto identity. It sat between the brand’s enduro-derived machines and its more performance-oriented street models, appealing to riders who wanted a simple, narrow, highly agile motorcycle with strong real-world punch. Over time, the LC4 platform evolved through the SMC line as emissions rules, fueling, and chassis development changed, but the basic purpose stayed the same: a deliberately unruly road bike with race-inspired attitude.
The original SMC badge ran through the 2011 model year. KTM then moved to the SMC R naming for the next chapter of the LC4 supermoto family, carrying the concept forward under a revised designation.
