KTM’s LC4 single-cylinder four-stroke was introduced in the late 1980s as the company’s first liquid-cooled four-stroke engine and quickly became a defining part of its off-road identity. Official KTM history places the start of LC4 serial production in 1987, and KTM’s later LC4 anniversary material describes that original engine as a 553 cc race-spec unit. The earliest LC4 applications were enduro and competition-oriented machines, reflecting KTM’s roots in hard-enduro and rally use rather than street-bike comfort.
This first LC4 version belongs to the original era of the engine family before later revisions enlarged and reworked the concept for new generations of KTM singles. By the late 1990s, KTM had moved into a significantly updated LC4 layout, with contemporary coverage noting changes for the 1998–1999 model cycle and a higher-displacement, revised road- and dual-sport-oriented tune. That makes the first LC4 version a distinct early production phase, associated with the original 1987 launch and ending before the later redesigns arrived.
