The Story of the Super Adventure R/S

KTM introduced the 1290 Super Adventure line for the 2015 model year as its flagship large-displacement travel-enduro, building on the earlier 1190 Adventure and the company’s LC8 V-twin adventure platform. The nameplate quickly became KTM’s premium long-distance adventure offering, aimed at riders who wanted serious touring range with the brand’s more aggressive off-road character.

Over time, the line evolved from a single model into distinct road- and off-road-focused derivatives. The S version became the more asphalt-biased, technology-rich member of the family, while the R variant was developed as the harder-edged, dirt-capable counterpart. KTM refreshed the range in successive generations, but the Super Adventure name remained continuous rather than disappearing and returning under a separate revival.

The model’s significance lies in how it helped define KTM’s upper-tier adventure lineup: a big twin with a strong rally-inspired identity, positioned above the middleweight adventure machines and aimed at riders who wanted one motorcycle to cover touring, fast road use and genuine rough-terrain travel.
