Introduced for the 2006 model year, this naked middleweight was Kawasaki’s roadster counterpart to its faired 650 twin and was developed as an approachable, everyday-friendly bike with a modern parallel-twin engine and simple, upright ergonomics. It arrived as part of Kawasaki’s broader mid-capacity twin strategy, giving the brand a flexible platform that could be adapted into both naked and fully faired versions for different markets. The model quickly became a familiar presence in Europe and other regions where practical, affordable performance bikes were especially popular.
Over its life, the bike evolved through several updates rather than a complete break in identity. Kawasaki refreshed the styling, chassis details and equipment over time, while keeping the same basic formula: light weight, manageable size and a responsive twin-cylinder character aimed at newer riders as well as experienced commuters and weekend riders. A significant redesign arrived for the 2012 model year, when the bike gained more aggressive styling and revised hardware, helping it stay competitive in the class.
The nameplate remained in production until it was effectively superseded for the 2017 model year, when Kawasaki introduced the Z650 as the successor to the ER-6 series. Because the original run continued without a documented gap from launch through its replacement, it is treated as a single continuous production period.
