MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Q40

This compact luxury sport sedan appeared for the 2015 model year as Infiniti’s renamed continuation of the long-running G Sedan. Rather than launching as an all-new design, it carried forward the familiar rear-wheel-drive sedan formula that had already built a strong reputation among enthusiasts for balanced handling, a naturally aspirated V6, and understated performance credibility. The nameplate change was part of Infiniti’s brand-wide shift to the Q naming strategy, with sedan and coupe models moving away from the older G badge. In the U.S. market, the car was sold only briefly under the Q40 name before production ended after 2015. That short run makes it something of a transitional model: mechanically and conceptually rooted in the earlier G Sedan, but marketed during Infiniti’s modern Q-era rebranding. Today, it is remembered as one of the last classic Infiniti sport sedans to emphasize traditional rear-drive proportions and a driver-focused character before the brand’s lineup moved more decisively toward newer Q-badged replacements.
