The Story of the XR500R

Honda’s XR500R was the company’s big-bore air-cooled four-stroke off-road machine for the early 1980s, emerging as part of the XR family’s push beyond recreational trail riding into serious desert and rally use. It was offered from the 1981 model year and continued through 1984, with the nameplate tied to Honda’s evolution of the XR concept in that period. The early bikes carried the rugged, long-travel off-road character that made the XR line popular with enduro riders and privateer racers, while later versions reflected Honda’s rapid development of four-stroke off-road technology.

The XR500R became especially well known for its role in endurance events and desert competition. Honda’s Dakar effort in 1982 used an XR500R-based machine to score the brand’s first motorcycle-class victory in that event, helping cement the model’s reputation as more than just a trail bike. Over its run, the XR500R was steadily updated rather than reinvented, and the final 1984 version represented the end of Honda’s 500cc XR era before the larger XR600R took over in the following model year.

For enthusiasts, the XR500R occupies an important place in Honda’s off-road history: it bridges the earlier, simpler XR trail bikes and the more advanced big-bore four-strokes that followed, and it remains associated with the rugged, mechanical, desert-racing image that made the XR name famous.
