MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the NX125

Honda introduced this compact dual-sport street/trail motorcycle for the 1988 model year as a lightweight, approachable machine aimed at riders who wanted an easygoing mix of pavement use and mild off-pavement capability. The original launch positioned it as a fresh alternative to both conventional small-displacement road bikes and more serious enduro-style machines, with practical hardware such as a four-stroke single-cylinder engine, full street equipment, a small fairing, and long-travel suspension. Honda’s own Japanese launch announcement dates the model’s release to March 10, 1988, and Honda owner-manual literature covers 1988-1990 examples, indicating a short single production run that continued into 1990. The nameplate did not become a long-running series in this form; instead, it remains a notable late-1980s Honda lightweight adventure-style machine and an early example of the company’s NX concept, which emphasized all-around usability rather than outright dirt performance. Enthusiasts remember it for its compact proportions, distinctive styling, and the way it anticipated later small-displacement dual-sport and mini-adventure motorcycles.
