MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the CBR900RR

Honda’s CBR900RR was introduced for the 1992 model year as a landmark supersport motorcycle and the original machine in what became the Fireblade lineage. It was conceived around Honda’s idea of “total control,” emphasizing a lightweight, compact chassis and agile real-world handling rather than the era’s typical pursuit of sheer engine size and peak output. The model quickly stood out because it paired liter-bike performance with packaging and road manners that felt much smaller and easier to manage than most of its rivals.

For Europe, Honda initially marketed the bike as the FireBlade, but the CBR900RR designation soon became widely established across markets. The nameplate evolved through several major revisions rather than completely changing identity: a redesigned 1994 version brought styling and chassis refinements, while the 1996 update increased displacement and further sharpened the bike’s handling character. In 2000, the model was substantially reworked again, with a more modern engine and chassis package that preserved the lightweight philosophy while raising performance.

The CBR900RR nameplate reached its final model year in 2002, when Honda’s last version under that badge was sold in some markets as the CBR954RR. After that, the supersport flagship transitioned to the CBR1000RR family. As a result, the CBR900RR is remembered as the defining early Fireblade, a motorcycle widely credited with reshaping expectations for how a high-performance sport bike should feel on the road.
