MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the TRX400EX

Honda’s 400-class sport ATV arrived for the 1999 model year as a significant step forward for the company’s recreational four-wheel lineup. It was positioned as a high-performance trail and sport machine at a time when Honda was best known in the ATV world for utility-focused FourTrax models, and it quickly stood out for bringing serious sport-quad capability into a broadly approachable package. The model drew enthusiast attention because it combined Honda’s reputation for durability with a chassis and engine concept aimed squarely at aggressive riding, casual racing, and all-around off-road fun.

Over its run, the nameplate became one of Honda’s best-known sport ATV offerings and earned a strong following among riders who wanted a middleweight machine with a lively character and a reputation for reliability. It represented an important chapter in Honda’s ATV history because it helped reestablish the company’s presence in the sport-quad segment after the decline of the earlier two-stroke performance era.

The nameplate remained on sale through the 2008 model year. For 2009, Honda continued the same general lineage under a revised model name, but the original nameplate itself did not return as a separate revival. As a result, this record reflects a single continuous production run from 1999 through 2008.
