MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Interstate

Honda’s Interstate nameplate began in 1980 as the factory-equipped long-distance touring version of the second-generation Gold Wing. It was created around the GL1100 to bring fairing, saddlebags, and a trunk to the Gold Wing platform as standard equipment, turning Honda’s big touring motorcycle into a more complete highway machine for American riders. The Gold Wing Interstate continued through the GL1200 era, with Honda’s own history showing GL1200 Interstate year models through 1987 before the Gold Wing line moved on to the GL1500 for 1988.

After a long absence, Honda revived the Interstate name for a very different motorcycle in the 2010 model year. This later Interstate was the VT1300CT, part of Honda’s VT1300 cruiser family and positioned as a more touring-oriented custom/cruiser with hard luggage and wind protection. It was sold as a separate modern interpretation of the nameplate rather than a continuation of the original Gold Wing-based tourer.

Because the Interstate badge appeared in two distinct production eras with a gap in between, the nameplate’s history is best understood as a revival rather than a single uninterrupted run. The original Gold Wing Interstate established the model’s reputation for factory touring convenience, while the VT1300CT brought the same name back for a new generation of cruiser buyers who wanted relaxed styling with real road-trip practicality.
