MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Varadero

This Honda adventure-touring nameplate was introduced for the 1999 model year as the XL1000V Varadero, a large-displacement, long-distance dual-sport built to offer more road comfort and touring ability than the smaller Transalp. It became known for its tall stance, broad fairing, and big-tank, all-weather character, making it especially popular in Europe and among riders looking for a capable long-haul machine with a rugged image. The model was assembled in Honda’s Spanish manufacturing operation for much of its life, reflecting Honda’s strategy of building larger motorcycles for the European market close to its customers. Early examples used the original carbureted setup, while later versions evolved with fuel injection and ABS-equipped variants as the line matured. The Varadero remained in production until the 2012 model year, after which Honda moved on from the nameplate rather than reviving it in a later, separate run.
