MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the SXS5M2 (Pioneer 520)

Honda introduced this compact two-seat side-by-side for the 2021 model year as a new addition to its Pioneer utility lineup. It was conceived as a narrow, work-focused machine built around Honda’s small-footprint philosophy: a 50-inch-wide chassis that could access width-restricted trails and still fit more easily into a standard pickup bed. From the start, the nameplate emphasized practicality over size, combining a compact footprint with a tilt/dump cargo bed, selectable 2WD/4WD, and Honda’s familiar automatic transmission layout.

The 2021 launch effectively established the modern identity of the nameplate, and the model has remained in production since then as a continuous run. Honda has updated the machine over time, but it has stayed true to the same basic formula: a two-passenger rec/utility SxS aimed at landowners, farm use, light work, and recreational riding where maneuverability matters more than outright size. That positioning has helped it stand apart from larger Pioneer variants.

In Honda’s lineup, this model sits as one of the brand’s smallest side-by-sides, but it inherits the company’s long-running emphasis on durability, usability, and straightforward controls. Its compact dimensions, utility bed, and modest two-seat layout make it especially appealing to buyers who want a machine that is easy to transport, easy to store, and capable enough for daily chores. The nameplate has not had a break in production, so it remains a single continuous-generation model rather than a revived or recurring badge.
