MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the XR250L

Honda’s XR250L was the street-legal dual-purpose member of the XR family for the U.S. market, introduced for the 1991 model year as a more approachable, road-capable companion to Honda’s off-road-focused XR250R. It carried the XR nameplate’s reputation for lightweight, simple, durable four-stroke trail machinery, but was equipped and tuned for everyday dual-sport use rather than pure competition. In Honda’s broader history, the XR series grew out of the company’s four-stroke off-road and dual-purpose lineage that had already been established through the XL and XLR families, and the XR250L fit that tradition as a practical on/off-road motorcycle with an enthusiast following. The model was sold through the 1996 model year in the United States, after which the XR250L nameplate disappeared from Honda’s lineup. It did not reappear later under the same exact designation, making this a single continuous production run rather than a revived nameplate. Today it is remembered as one of Honda’s classic small-displacement dual-sports from the early 1990s, valued for its simplicity, versatility, and strong connection to the XR era.
