MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the PCX

Honda introduced the PCX as a new global scooter aimed at riders who wanted a more premium, modern commuter rather than a basic step-through. The nameplate first reached the market in Thailand in late 2009 and then launched in Japan for the 2010 model year as part of Honda’s strategy to export a common scooter concept to multiple regions from a Thai production base. From the outset, the PCX was positioned as an international model, with sales and exports aimed at Japan, Europe, the United States, and ASEAN markets.

The PCX quickly became one of Honda’s most important small-displacement scooters because it blended practical everyday use with a more upscale design and a relaxed riding character. Honda has repeatedly described it as a model intended to set a new standard for scooters by emphasizing comfort, quality, and a global appeal suited to different urban markets. Over time, the PCX evolved through several major updates while remaining the same core nameplate, including later additions such as hybrid and electric-related derivatives in some markets and periodic redesigns that refreshed the bodywork and equipment.

As a nameplate, PCX has remained in continuous production since its introduction and has become especially significant in Honda’s modern scooter lineup. In many regions it is viewed as a flagship commuter scooter: compact enough for daily city use, but styled and positioned with a more premium feel than Honda’s traditional utilitarian models. The PCX’s long-running success also helped establish it as a truly global Honda scooter rather than a model tied to a single domestic market.
