The Story of the CRF450L

Honda introduced this nameplate in 2018 as a street-legal, off-road-focused machine derived from the CRF450R motocross platform. It was developed to deliver serious trail and enduro ability while adding the road equipment needed for public-street use, positioning it above Honda’s lighter dual-sport models and closer in character to a competition bike than a typical commuter dual-purpose motorcycle. In Honda’s CRF family history, it marked the company’s move to apply its modern 450cc off-road racing know-how to a licensed on-road package, and it was presented as a true bridge between motocross performance and everyday rideability.

The model nameplate appears to have been short-lived. Honda’s later CRF history materials still identify this bike as a 2018 introduction, and the line then moved on with a renamed successor under a different suffix rather than continuing the original nameplate. That makes this bike an important transitional entry in Honda’s CRF lineage: it captured Honda’s effort to offer a factory-built, large-displacement dual-sport with competition roots, before the company reshaped the concept under a revised model name for later markets.
