The Story of the VF750 (Magna V45)

Honda introduced this Magna as part of its first V4 production lineup in 1982, alongside the VF750 Sabre and VF750F. It arrived as an early expression of Honda’s new liquid-cooled V4 era, combining cruiser styling with the company’s then-cutting-edge V4 engineering. The model was positioned as a performance-oriented custom, with the long, low stance and shaft-drive layout that gave it a distinct American-style character while still carrying the technical ambition of Honda’s early-1980s flagship motorcycles.

In Honda’s own historical materials, the VF750 Magna is identified with the 1982 launch of the VF750 Sabre/Magna family, and the product archive places VF750 Magna in the 1982 model-year line-up. In the North American and export markets, this first Magna is generally associated with the V45 name, reflecting Honda’s marketing of the bike around its 750 cc V4 engine family. The nameplate helped establish the Magna identity as a cruiser that leaned more toward acceleration and sportiness than traditional laid-back custom styling.

This first-generation Magna was short-lived, but it became historically important because it set the template for Honda’s later Magna cruisers. The lineage continued in revised forms after the original VF750 version, with Honda later applying the Magna name to other V4 and V-twin models. For enthusiasts, the VF750 Magna remains the original V45 Magna and an important early chapter in Honda’s 1980s V4 story.
