MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the CR85R

This small-displacement two-stroke motocross racer debuted for the 2003 model year as an updated successor to the earlier 80cc class machine. The first version brought a larger 84.7cc engine and a revised bodywork style that matched the then-current racing-family look, while keeping the focus on young riders and entry-level competition use. It was positioned as an approachable but fully purpose-built mini motocrosser rather than a recreational trail bike.

Across its run, the nameplate followed a fairly short and focused production life. Annual model-year updates were modest after the debut, with changes centered on graphics, small refinements, and compliance updates rather than major mechanical reinvention. For 2006 and 2007, the machine received updated shroud graphics, while the core package remained the same basic lightweight two-stroke race platform.

The model stayed in production through the 2007 model year, after which it was discontinued. Its legacy is tied to the last era of Honda’s small-bore two-stroke motocross racers, and it is remembered as one of the key stepping-stones for youth racers moving into full competition machinery.
