Honda introduced this 600cc Shadow-based cruiser for the 1988 model year as a smaller-displacement member of the Shadow family and one of the brand’s core entry-level American-style customs. In North America it was marketed under the VLX name, and it quickly became known for blending classic cruiser styling with Honda’s reputation for approachable, dependable street bikes. Honda’s own history materials show the model being announced in 1987 for multiple markets, with the production model arriving as an 1988 model-year machine.
Over time, the nameplate became one of the most recognizable middleweight cruisers in Honda’s lineup. It retained the basic Shadow formula rather than chasing radical redesigns, which helped give it a long service life and a loyal following among new riders and commuters as well as custom-bike enthusiasts. Honda also expanded the line with a Deluxe version, giving buyers a more dressed-up alternative without changing the model’s overall identity.
The model appears in official U.S. certification records through the 2007 model year, which makes 2007 the final confidently verified model year for this continuous production run. While the motorcycle was sold under slightly different regional badges and trim designations, it remained the same underlying Shadow VLX family throughout its life rather than being replaced by a later revival of the same nameplate.
