Harley-Davidson introduced this Sportster nameplate for model year 1986, when the line adopted the Evolution engine in 883cc and 1100cc forms. The 1100cc version was the larger-displacement Sportster of the first Evolution-era years and represented a major transition away from the long-running Ironhead generation. It was built only for a short run, making it a relatively uncommon and historically important chapter in Sportster history. For 1988, Harley-Davidson moved the big-displacement Sportster forward with the 1200cc model, leaving the 1100 as a brief but notable bridge between the old Sportster era and the later Evolution family.
